PewDiePie talks about playing the original DotA in net cafes while he was in Sweden.
He stated that League of Legends would not exist without DotA.
Famous YouTuber and gamer Felix Arvid Ulf Kjellberg aka PewDiePie appeared on the Trash Taste podcast recently and talked about his favorite games and how he learned English while playing games growing up. PewDiePie revealed that he’s always been a PC gamer, even when he was a kid in Sweden. He stated that it was how he was able to go to LAN parties and PC cafes. Pewdiepe jokingly said “that’s cringe” when he learned that two of the Trash Taste podcasters were console gamers.
For those of you who don’t know about Trash Taste, it is a weekly podcast hosted by Joey Bizinger, Garnt Maneetapho, and Connor Colquhoun – three content creators based out of Tokyo who talk about anime, Japanese pop culture, and lifestyle. The latest episode titled “HE’S FINALLY HERE” dropped on 5th November and it featured PewDiePie, who recently moved to Japan permanently.
PewDiePie talks about PC cafes, games, & more
While talking about YouTube videos, PewDiePie revealed that his mother’s first reaction to seeing his video was, “Wow, you speak English? What the f***?” Then he revealed that he picked up English by talking to people online while playing games. Connor then pointed out that when people play games in Europe, they are predominantly online.
PewDiePie then explained that there were many net and PC cafes in Sweden where he grew up in contrast to the United Kingdom [UK] where there are not many. He added, “I wanted to open one [PC cafe] in the UK because I’m like ‘the kids need to experience this’” While talking about other games, PewDiePie also revealed he was a big fan of the original Halo and stated, “Halo was the sh**.”
PewDiePie weighs in on DotA vs League of Legends & Arcane
While talking about LAN parties and gaming, PewDiePie was asked what he played growing up. When Connor asked, “You play Halo much?”, PewDiePie replied, “We used to play DotA [Defense of the Ancients].” PewDiePie added, “DotA was the f**** sh** back in the day because in Sweden we’ve got net cafes and we would just play that.”
He saw Connor physically cringe and was told that he played League of Legends and not DotA. PewDiePie said in jest, “F*** you!” He then added, “You owe everything to DotA. Yeah, League wouldn’t exist without DotA.”
Connor then said, “It’s like everything. The first thing that comes out is s*** and the second thing that comes out afterward fixes it and makes it better. It’s like the Dota movie [series] vs Arcane.”
Funnily, PewDiePie revealed that he has not watched the League of Legends-based show Arcane and stated that he does not plan on watching it, despite many people asking him to.
Earlier in 2021, PewDiePie uploaded a video titled “Games That Defined Me Growing Up” where he talked about his favorite games. He noted that he had so much fun playing the original DotA, a mod for Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, in net cafes with his friends. He then talked about other games that spawned from the original DotA. “I remember League of Legends coming up, right? And we were all laughing our assess off. We were like, ‘There’s no way this garbage is gonna become popular. Are you kidding me? It looks like f*** trash. Look how colorful and dumb it is.’ Now it is the biggest game of all time,” said PewDiePie.
The debate of “League of Legends vs Dota” is a never-ending one and both games have their dedicated fan bases. It is safe to say that these two games have completely revolutionized the MOBA genre in the last decade.
